Candle Care Tips for a Better Burn

You picked the perfect scent, now let’s make sure it burns beautifully every single time. A little candle care goes a long way, and these are the exact tips we include with every Wick N Twisted candle.

Remove All Packaging Before You Light It

Always remove any packaging, labels, or wrapping before your first burn. Keep the wax pool clean and free of debris like fallen match tips before lighting.

Burn at Least 2 Hours on the First Light

The first burn sets the tone for every burn after it. Wax has memory, meaning it will only melt as wide as it did the first time. Burn your candle for a minimum of 2 hours, or until you achieve a full melting pool, when the wax has melted all the way to the edge of the vessel. This prevents tunneling, that frustrating hole that forms down the center and wastes good wax.

Trim the Wick After Every Burn

Once the wax has cooled and solidified, trim the wick down to ¼" tall. This keeps the wax pool clean, the flame controlled, and prevents sooty buildup that can dull your scent over time. A wick trimmer makes the job effortless.

Don’t Burn for More Than 4 Hours at a Time

Burning longer than 4 hours can overheat the wax, weaken fragrance throw, and shorten your candle’s life. In some cases, an overheated jar can shatter. Four hours is the sweet spot, then extinguish, let it cool, trim, and relight when you’re ready.

Keep It Away from Drafts and Flammable Surfaces

Never burn a candle near curtains, paper, fabric, or anywhere there’s a draft. Air movement causes uneven burns and oversized flames. Always place your candle on a temperature-safe surface to protect it from heat damage.

Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended

Always burn your candle within sight, and never leave a lit candle in a room you’re leaving. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.

Don’t Use Water to Put It Out

Never use water or any liquid to extinguish your candle, it can cause wax to splatter and potentially crack your jar. Use a candle snuffer or gently place the lid on top instead. It’s safer and keeps your wax surface smooth for the next burn.

Stop Burning When ¼" of Wax Remains

Discontinue use when about ¼" of wax remains. This protects your jar and the surface beneath it from excess heat. And don’t toss that jar, clean it out and repurpose it!
